In our particular situation at this location, there was no ambient light to work with, so we used a combination of a higher iso and 3 flashes to light everything - a Canon 580EXII and 2 Nikon SB26s. This would insure that no matter where the model was on the runway, the light from the two SB26s would fall on them. In his example, he balanced his strobes with the ambient light of the gym. Also, since the distance from the two side flashes to the models remained relatively constant, the exposures would be roughly the same no matter where on the runway the model went. To test it out, I walked alongside the runway and checked to make sure that at every spot on the length of the runway that I could still see the face of the two strobes....

I use a Sachtler FSB6 and a Cine DSLR both on a Sachtler Speedlock. The Balancing Functionality of a Sachtler to put it simply is SUPERB. I always keep my rig tight and remove the Handle Assembly and Shoulder Mount Assembly Making it easier to balance and at the same time getting rid of non functional weight. The smoothness and functionality of the Sachtler will definitely show up in your shots, The Form Factor. It will not come close to the functionality of a Sachtler.

We also added a sheet of black foam-core as a background in one of the shots to see if it changed the skin coloration, testing to see if the orange background was affecting the skin... I also added a head next to the lens with a 7" reflector with a 20-degree grid to add a little more sparkle to the eyes. Here I used a Westcott 7-foot parabolic umbrella (white with black cover) overhead with a home-made reflector under her chin....
At full focal length of the heavy lenze, the center of gravity is so far from the tripod itself that the head slowly creeps down and then stops at a particular point. So in this case, I had to point above the moon, in total darkness, and hope for the creep to stop exactly with the moon in the viewfinder. It was just an experiment to practice with my tripod and my new wireless remote. It took me a while to find out that there are specialized tripod heads for such heavy lenzes. Most models attach to the side of your lenze, roughly at the center of gravity and let you pan in any direction with great ease. However, I also found most models to be very expensive and I specifically wanted one to fit on my existing tripod. So I ended up with this, the Manfrotto M393:. Although my tripod supports up to 9 kilos, its head does not....

There is a really nice and long section of foam at the top of the monopod which makes gripping the monopod secure and comfortable The dual 1/4" - 3/8" fixing screw is a thoughtful inclusion for those people that need a 1/4" solution. The camera can mount to the monopod without the ballhead, but it just feels better with it, and also you can't tilt the camera sideways on the monopod without the ballhead on it, otherwise you are picking up the whole monopod. The design is slightly different from the 701RC2 in that the 700RC2 uses a spring-lift, screw-type lever knob for locking the Quick Release plate as opposed to the spring-loaded lever-type lock on the 701RC2.
